SYANA 2016 Gurmat Retreat: Reflections

Vaaheguru Ji  Ka Khalsa Vaaheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

We want to sincerely thank all of you for attending this year’s Gurmat Retreat. As everyone is settling back into their daily routine of life, we hope the recharge, the motivation, the reflection and most importantly, the power of Guru and Sangat from last weekend are deep seated within you. The atmosphere and environment of Retreat provides a sampling of the power of Sangat and we genuinely hope thirst for knowledge and Baani continues beyond this weekend.

We hope by spending the weekend focusing on our theme “The Panth Awakens” you were inspired to start taking those individual steps in moving the Panth forward. We were astounded by the efforts and talents that were shared this weekend as we worked through our first Sikhia Projects. Please don’t let the enthusiasm stop there! We will be in touch as the projects are moved to an online platform, and hope to identify a core group that will help us finish out these projects. If you were inspired to start another project after this weekend and are looking for team members to help you, please feel free to reach out to any of the organizers. We are excited to see what we can accomplish together!

Pictures are posted on our Facebook page.  If you have pictures from this year’s retreat, please share them with us.  Once videos of the workshops and Keertan files are uploaded we will send out the links.

Again, thank you so much for your active participation. The SYANA family continues to grow each year, and we hope to continue our mutual commitment towards progress as the years go by!

Charhdi Kala,

SYANA Sevadaars

SYANA 2016 Gurmat Camp: Update #1

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

To all SYANA 2016 campers:

Camp is just over a month away and we are looking forward to a fun-filled week with sangat, learning, and keertan! As you know, SYANA Gurmat camp moved to a new campsite last year and are excited to join with our partners at YMCA Camp Copneconic for our 2nd year to provide you with a positive, meaningful experience. We are looking forward to meeting old friends but also encouraging new friendships. We have many new campers this year, and are excited to welcome them to the SYANA family. We have a number of special activities planned for the week and are excited about the time we will all be spending together soon.

This year’s camp will focus on the history and lives of the brave Sikhs that came before us and the struggles they faced in order for the Khalsa Raj to prosper. In Gurmat classes, campers will learn about the importance and purpose of the Sikh Rehit Maryada and the significance of Guru Panth. Through Keertan classes, campers get an opportunity to learn new shabads. Gatka classes will provide exposure to Sikh martial spirit and through a daily parbhat pheri and divaan, campers will learn to experience Sikhi through Sangat. The hope is that with this glimpse of the Sikh way of life, the light that exists within each child will be kindled to continue this journey throughout the year.

Below are a few important details related to the camp this year, so please read in its entirety and parents, please make sure to read the link cited below with specific information for you.

1. All campers should arrive between 2:30 pm and 4:30 pm on Sunday, July 3rd.

2. If you are travelling by air, bus or train, please notify us with your travel plans, no later than June 19th at info@sikhyouthalliance.org so that we can make arrangements for your transportation to/from the campsite. The closest airport is Flint, MI but we can also pick up from Detroit, MI

3. Don’t forget your Vaajaas! In order to gain the most from your keertan classes, it’s important you have your own vaaja or portable keyboard.

4. Make sure to have enough Dastaars, Chunnies/bandanas for the week. It is a camp requirement that your head be covered throughout the day.

5. This year, we will be offering a variety of water activities. If you are interested in going in the water, please make sure to bring appropriate attire. We do ask that both Singhs and Kaurs wear t-shirts and shorts with their swim gear.

6. A list of items to bring to camp is on our website. Please take a look at this to make sure you are prepared for the week.

7. Please bring a reusable water/sport bottle – it can become hot around the campsite and it’s important that all campers drink plenty of water throughout the day. Make sure your bottle is labeled with your name and state.

8. Counselors will be reaching out to you soon as we prepare for camp – please be on the lookout for their emails.

Again, we are excited to see you all soon! Please let us know if you have any questions!

SYANA 2016 Gurmat Retreat: UPDATE #2

Vaaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaaheguru Ji Ki Fateh

The Panth Awakens

Those who remain awake in this house are very rare – in doing so, they retain their entire wealth.

That person alone is awake, unto whom God shows Mercy. This investment, wealth and property shall remain intact.

We hope you’re as as excited as us for this weekend! A couple of our lovely Bhain Jis, Manvir Kaur and Japman Kaur, have made a vlog to give you a heads up on what to expect this weekend.

One of the projects they mention is the Hack-A-Thon. This project is sponsored by Sikhia, an online education platform seeking to develop a collection of short videos on various Sikh topics. You can find out more about Sikhia in this video.
Throughout the weekend, we’ll take out time to work in small groups on content creation for Sikhia. The idea is to create a 3-5 minute video presentation on something we’ve learned at retreat or any other topic that inspires you. The speakers will all be available to help with research, and we’ll also lead you through the process of planning out and creating the videos.

We’ve got a lot of talented individuals coming to retreat, so we’re hoping to create some creative videos! All kinds of videos are encouraged, anywhere from PowerPoint presentations with voice-overs to musicals performances to live-sketching presentations. Please bring any equipment you think may be helpful—laptops, iPads, cameras, audio recording equipment, etc. We’ll also have supplies available for you, but they’ll be shared, so time with them may be limited.

For more detailed information on what we’ll cover over the weekend, please look at this handout (Hack-A-Thon Cheat Sheet).

Can’t wait to see you all! Stay in Chardi Kala!

SYANA 2016 Gurmat Camp: Registration Opens Soon

SYANA Camp Registration Opens Soon

Vaaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaaheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

Sikh Youth Alliance of North America (SYANA) is excited to announce this year’s Gurmat camp will be held from July 3rd to July 9th, 2016 at YMCA Camp Copneconic in Fenton, MI – approx. 60 minutes outside of Detroit. Online registration will open on Wednesday, May 11th, 2016 at www.sikhyouthalliance.org/camp.

The annual Gurmat camp has always been SYANA’s flagship endeavor, aimed at giving Sikh youth across North America exposure and access to the Guru’s message, in the hopes of inspiring a life-long commitment to the Sikh way of life. For over 40 years, SYANA has provided Sikh children across North America with a 1 week summer experience that immerses the youngest members of our Panth in Keertan, Paath, Gurmat, History classes, and most importantly, the benefits of Guru-oriented Sangat.

SYANA Gurmat Camp returns for its second year to Camp Copneconic. Situated on 750 wooded acres around Lake Copneconic, the campsite offers a variety of programming including high ropes courses, archery, ziplines and water activities. A serene and natural atmosphere with dorm-like accommodations will help make sure our campers are comfortable throughout their stay. We had a great first year at this campsite last year and will continue to improve the already amazing camp experience by offering more personalized attention to each one of our campers.

This yearly event aims to bring together Sikh youth from across North America to an environment where the Sikh way of life can be experienced. Immersed in the inspiring traditions of the Sikh faith, these youth capture a glimpse of the Guru’s message in the hopes of encouraging a love for the Sikh path. The camp is structured to encourage relationships that strengthen a spiritual experience through Sangat. In spending a week together, youth create friendships that last a lifetime.

We hope to welcome both veteran and new campers into a week-long adventure of Sikhi-inspired fun and learning.

The Panth Awakens

Those who remain awake in this house are very rare – in doing so, they retain their entire wealth.

That person alone is awake, unto whom God shows Mercy. This investment, wealth and property shall remain intact.

The past year has witnessed significant activity throughout the global Sikh community. In protest to the continued detention of Sikh political prisoners, Bapu Surat Singh became an iconic symbol for nonviolent resistance, the Panth gave an overwhelming response to a call for a Sarbat Khalsa, Sikh-led organizations brought relief and assistance to thousands of people in war and disaster torn areas of the world, and even in North America, Sikhs have involved themselves in national political stages and grassroots organizations to effect community development and improvement. The empowerment, hope and energy infused within the Panth is palpable. In many ways, one might feel as though there has been a Panthic awakening.

“The Panth Awakens” and how this relates to our own self-awakening, how the steps involved in becoming individually awakened are correlated to lasting Panthic progress, and how we continue to stay involved and keep energies focused on tangible results is the theme of this year’s annual Gurmat retreat hosted by the Sikh Youth Alliance of North America (SYANA).

This year’s Gurmat retreat will be held from May 27 to May 30, 2016 at YMCA Camp Storer, Jackson, MI just over an hour from the Detroit Metro airport. We are hard at work to provide some of the best speakers and activists in North America to facilitate workshops, discussions, and lectures. Open to all young adults, ages 18 – 30, we hope you will be able to join us as we learn from each other, inspire one another and work together to harness the knowledge and emotion of Guru’s shabad.

We will be providing updates on speakers and workshops via our Facebook page. To register visit our website. We hope to see you soon!

Immediate Release of Sardar Ravinderjit Singh

Dear Khalsa Jee:

Waheguru Ji ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji ki Fateh!

It is with a heavy heart I would like to request you to file the petition for the immediate release of Sardar Ravinderjit Singh, a US Citizen, who has been in Punjab police custody since February 26, 2015. His detention for such a prolonged period of time without any trial is not only illegal but also unprecedented.

Sardar Ravinderjit Singh went to India to visit his 82 year old father, Sardar Surat Singh, whose health was deteriorating as he has been on a peaceful hunger strike since January 16, 2015 to protest against the violations of Human rights of the political prisoners in India. Sardar Surat Singh was arrested by the police and detained in local Hospital in Ludhiana where he is being forcibly fed against his wishes.

Through this petition, we would like to appeal to the US Government to intervene and secure the release of their citizen – Sardar Ravinderjit Singh from illegal detention so that he can look after his father and return back home to his family in California. Please visit the following link and submit your petition today as time is of essence:

With best wishes for the Charhdi Kala of Khalsa Panth
In the service of Guru-Panth
