SYANA 2016 Gurmat Camp: Updates from Day Two and Three

Vaaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Vaaheguru JI Ki Fateh!

SYANA Gurmat campers had such a blast these past two days! We did a lot of fun and exciting activities and workshops with the campers. On Tuesday, the A and B group campers had the option of participating in the high ropes course and the zip line. The C, D, and E groups had the option of doing reptiles and hikes. Today, the campers participated in water activities! The A groupers went canoeing, the B groupers went tubing, and the C and D groupers participated in inflatable water activities!

Furthermore, our annual Tuesday Keertan Durbar was a HUGE success! We had over 55 campers ready to do their Shabad by the second day of camp!! This was such a huge accomplishment for both the campers and Keertan teachers!

Lastly, during divans the campers listened to divan talks done by our youth teachers. The first divan talk was on divan protocol where the campers learned about how to behave in a Guru’s Darbar and the purpose of divans. The second divan talk was about Karah Parshaad (Degh). In this divan talk, the campers learned the significance of Degh and the process of making it. The third divan talk was on Ardaas. During this talk, the campers learned what the word “Ardaas” meant and went through the history of Ardaas and all the Shaheeds!

These past few days have been filled with learning, inspiration, and SO much energy!

SYANA 2016 Gurmat Camp: Day One is Over!

Vaaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Vaaheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

Day one has wrapped up and we have a lot to tell you! Yesterday after our first divan of #syana2016 we divided into groups for ice breakers where the campers got to know each other. After ice breakers, we got back together for our annual activity — A Pugh’s Life (A dastaar tying activity)!!! During this activity, campers got the chance to learn how to take care of their kes and practice tying different styles of dastars.

Today was the very first day of classes where the kids began learning about Sikh Rehit Maryada, Sikh History from 1700-1800s, Gatka, and Keertan. In the Sikh Rehit Maryada classes, campers delved into what qualities make a good Sikh and how a good Sikh should behave. Similarly, the campers discussed what it meant to have a daily discipline and what it means to have a personal living. Group B and C did a fun activity where they had to come up with group rules and guidelines. The campers quickly realized that creating these disciplines was a difficult task. Creating a few rules and regulations for roughly 35 campers was difficult enough, imagine how much time and communication it must have taken to create the Rehit Maryada!

In the second class, the campers were introduced to Sikh History from the 1700-1800s. This was around the time where Guru Gobind Singh Ji’s physical form left this world and the Guru Ganth and Guru Panth were established. The campers also learned about Banda Singh Bahadar’s life, accomplishments, and after his shaheedi when Sikhs had to retreat into the jungles because there was a price on their heads! Moreover, the instructors highlighted the importance of staying in chardi kala during these hard and dark times and always being in discipline! Group B Sikh History campers did an activity where they had to imagine they were the Sikh soldiers living in the jungle and had to live without food or family for weeks. If these Sikhs had the opportunity to send a letter home to their families, what would they say? After getting into the mindset of these Sikhs and writing the letters, the campers talked about staying in chardi kala and always being positive!

In Gatka Class, Groups A and B were split into two groups. The first group worked on footwork and range of attack. The second group practiced shastar vidya and the panthra, the Gatka warm-up. The techniques learned are fundamental basics which will help the campers advance and create a better Sant Sipahi lifestyle!

Last but not least, the campers had keertan class. During this class, the campers are taught a shabad which they will have to recite during divan. This year, our shabad is:

ਤਿਸੁ ਗੁਰਸਿਖ ਕੰਉ ਹੰਉ ਸਦਾ ਨਮਸਕਾਰੀ ਜੋ ਗੁਰ ਕੈ ਭਾਣੈ ਗੁਰਸਿਖੁ ਚਲਿਆ ।੧੮।

This Gursikh Kau, Hau Sada Namaskara, Jo Gur Kai Bhaanai Gurasikh Chaliaa |18|

This shabad, written by Guru Raam Das Ji, discusses how those GurSikhs who walk on the path of Sikhi and walk towards Vaheguru are forever blessed! Each day, campers learn one tukh of the shabad and by the end of the week, the campers should understand and know the meaning of the whole shabad! So, make sure you ask your kids about the theme shabad!!

The campers were full of energy and ready to learn a lot today! We can’t wait to send you more updates throughout the week!

SYANA 2016 Gurmat Retreat: Reflections

Vaaheguru Ji  Ka Khalsa Vaaheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

We want to sincerely thank all of you for attending this year’s Gurmat Retreat. As everyone is settling back into their daily routine of life, we hope the recharge, the motivation, the reflection and most importantly, the power of Guru and Sangat from last weekend are deep seated within you. The atmosphere and environment of Retreat provides a sampling of the power of Sangat and we genuinely hope thirst for knowledge and Baani continues beyond this weekend.

We hope by spending the weekend focusing on our theme “The Panth Awakens” you were inspired to start taking those individual steps in moving the Panth forward. We were astounded by the efforts and talents that were shared this weekend as we worked through our first Sikhia Projects. Please don’t let the enthusiasm stop there! We will be in touch as the projects are moved to an online platform, and hope to identify a core group that will help us finish out these projects. If you were inspired to start another project after this weekend and are looking for team members to help you, please feel free to reach out to any of the organizers. We are excited to see what we can accomplish together!

Pictures are posted on our Facebook page.  If you have pictures from this year’s retreat, please share them with us.  Once videos of the workshops and Keertan files are uploaded we will send out the links.

Again, thank you so much for your active participation. The SYANA family continues to grow each year, and we hope to continue our mutual commitment towards progress as the years go by!

Charhdi Kala,

SYANA 2016 Gurmat Camp: Update #1

Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh!

To all SYANA 2016 campers:

Camp is just over a month away and we are looking forward to a fun-filled week with sangat, learning, and keertan! As you know, SYANA Gurmat camp moved to a new campsite last year and are excited to join with our partners at YMCA Camp Copneconic for our 2nd year to provide you with a positive, meaningful experience. We are looking forward to meeting old friends but also encouraging new friendships. We have many new campers this year, and are excited to welcome them to the SYANA family. We have a number of special activities planned for the week and are excited about the time we will all be spending together soon.

This year’s camp will focus on the history and lives of the brave Sikhs that came before us and the struggles they faced in order for the Khalsa Raj to prosper. In Gurmat classes, campers will learn about the importance and purpose of the Sikh Rehit Maryada and the significance of Guru Panth. Through Keertan classes, campers get an opportunity to learn new shabads. Gatka classes will provide exposure to Sikh martial spirit and through a daily parbhat pheri and divaan, campers will learn to experience Sikhi through Sangat. The hope is that with this glimpse of the Sikh way of life, the light that exists within each child will be kindled to continue this journey throughout the year.

Below are a few important details related to the camp this year, so please read in its entirety and parents, please make sure to read the link cited below with specific information for you.

3. Don’t forget your Vaajaas! In order to gain the most from your keertan classes, it’s important you have your own vaaja or portable keyboard.

4. Make sure to have enough Dastaars, Chunnies/bandanas for the week. It is a camp requirement that your head be covered throughout the day.

SYANA 2016 Gurmat Retreat: UPDATE #2

Vaaheguru Ji Ka Khalsa Vaaheguru Ji Ki Fateh

The Panth Awakens

Those who remain awake in this house are very rare – in doing so, they retain their entire wealth.

That person alone is awake, unto whom God shows Mercy. This investment, wealth and property shall remain intact.

We hope you’re as as excited as us for this weekend! A couple of our lovely Bhain Jis, Manvir Kaur and Japman Kaur, have made a vlog to give you a heads up on what to expect this weekend.

One of the projects they mention is the Hack-A-Thon. This project is sponsored by Sikhia, an online education platform seeking to develop a collection of short videos on various Sikh topics. You can find out more about Sikhia in this video.
Throughout the weekend, we’ll take out time to work in small groups on content creation for Sikhia. The idea is to create a 3-5 minute video presentation on something we’ve learned at retreat or any other topic that inspires you. The speakers will all be available to help with research, and we’ll also lead you through the process of planning out and creating the videos.

We’ve got a lot of talented individuals coming to retreat, so we’re hoping to create some creative videos! All kinds of videos are encouraged, anywhere from PowerPoint presentations with voice-overs to musicals performances to live-sketching presentations. Please bring any equipment you think may be helpful—laptops, iPads, cameras, audio recording equipment, etc. We’ll also have supplies available for you, but they’ll be shared, so time with them may be limited.

For more detailed information on what we’ll cover over the weekend, please look at this handout (Hack-A-Thon Cheat Sheet).

Can’t wait to see you all! Stay in Chardi Kala!
